Case presentation A 65-year-old man underwent prostatectomy and received salvage radiotherapy his postoperative prostate-specific antigen level failed to decrease. Salvage External Beam Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer After Radical Prostatectomy

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in American men, with 192,289 new cases and 27,360 deaths expected in 2009.[1] While radical prostatectomy provides excellent control for clinically localized disease, approximately one-third of patients undergoing surgery will have positive surgical margins and another 9% will have seminal vesicle invasion.[2-5] Around one-third o...

Salvage radiotherapy for recurrent prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy.

CONTEXT Salvage radiotherapy may potentially cure patients with disease recurrence after radical prostatectomy, but previous evidence has suggested that it is ineffective in patients at the highest risk of metastatic disease progression. OBJECTIVE To delineate patients who may benefit from salvage radiotherapy for prostate cancer recurrence by identifying variables associated with a durable r...

[Prostate cancer recurrence after radical prostatectomy and salvage radiotherapy].

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of the radiotherapy to prostatic bed in patients with biochemical recurrence for prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyse the results of 292 patients underwent radical prostatectomy for localized prostate cancer T1-T2 between January 1992 and June 2003, with an average folow-up of 36 months (range 6 months to 12 years). We...

Salvage radiotherapy following radical prostatectomy.

Recurrent disease following radical prostatectomy will occur in approximately 20% of patients, for whom the therapeutic options include surveillance, salvage radiotherapy, or hormonal therapy. This review will focus on the evidence for salvage radiotherapy. Efficacy results of 30-50% have been reported from multiple retrospective series, with minimal morbidity. Unfortunately there are no random...

Adjuvant radiotherapy following radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND Men who have a radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer that does not involve lymph nodes, but extends beyond the prostate capsule into the seminal vesicles or to surgical margins, are at increased risk of relapse. In men with these high risk factors, radiotherapy (RT) directed at the prostate bed after surgery may reduce this risk, and be curative. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the...
